ICAR

About Us

Diversified Farming through Livestock and Agriculture

This estimation system comes out of an ICAR Farmer FIRST project led by ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes, Hisar, working with ICAR-IASRI, ICAR-IARI, ICAR-CIAH and CCS HAU. The project set out to improve buffalo production at the farmer's doorstep and to diversify the farming system around it.

The Farmer FIRST programme

The Farmer FIRST (Farm, Innovations, Resources, Science and Technology) programme aims at enriching the farmers–scientist interface, technology assemblage, application and feedback, partnership and institutional building and content mobilization, and has been initiated since October, 2016. It seeks to provide a platform to farmers and scientists for creating linkages, capacity development, technology adaptation and application, on-site input management, feedback and institution building.

The Farmer FIRST Programme (FFP) is an ICAR initiative to move beyond production and productivity, to privilege smallholder agriculture and the complex, diverse and risk prone realities of the majority of farmers through enhancing the farmers–scientists interface. There are concepts and domains that are new in emphasis, such as resource management, climate resilient agriculture, production management including storage, market, supply chains, value chains, innovation systems and information systems.

The Farmer FIRST concept places the farmer in a centric role for research problem identification, prioritization, and the conduct of experiments and their management in farmers' conditions. The focus is on the farmer's Farm, Innovations, Resources, Science and Technology (FIRST). Two terms — enriching knowledge and integrating technology — qualify the meaning of Farmer FIRST in the Indian context. Enriching knowledge signifies the need for the research system as well as farmers to learn from each other in the context of the existing farm environment, their perception of each other, and interactions with the sub-systems established around them. Technology integration is looked at from the perspective that the scientific outputs coming out of research institutions many times do not fit as such in farmers' conditions, and thus certain alterations and adaptations are required at field level for their acceptance, adoption and success.

The fund is released in PFMS code (0092) under Grant-in-aid General (Revenue) ₹75,98,328/- (Rupees Seventy-Five Lakh Ninety-Eight Thousand Three Hundred Twenty-Eight Only) vide Sanction No. General JULY TO SEPTEMBER 2022 216400000 (₹312.24 lakh) dated 13.07.2022, and Grant-in-aid Capital ₹7,15,000/- (Rupees Seven Lakh Fifteen Thousand Only) vide Sanction No. Capital JULY TO SEPTEMBER 2022 118590000 (₹196.07 lakh) dated 14.07.2022.

Expected outcome

  1. Sustainable scientific livestock production system at farmer doorstep and expanding Farmer FIRST buffalo herd, including the buffaloes of farmers under Farmer FIRST and the Farmer FIRST knowledge network.
  2. Farmer FIRST – progressive farmer knowledge network (a platform created under Farmer FIRST).
  3. Achievement of one calf per year by reducing infertility problems (50–60%) through assisted reproductive technologies; reduction in mastitis will decrease the cost of production.
  4. Availability of high merit germplasm for future herd replacement by calf for the future programme, to increase profitability from individual animals.
  5. For ensuring farmer welfare even in the situation of distress, diversification of agriculture with horticulture and apiculture will create more employment.
  6. Augmentation in farm income and livelihood, round the year employment generation, and replication / adoption of diversified farming by other farmers.

Impact indicators

And the scope for horizontal spread of technologies

  1. Adoption of scientific livestock husbandry practices for optimum utilization of resources to increase farmer profitability.
  2. Reduction in mastitis incidence and infertility problems, calf for the future with high genetic merit, and reduced calf mortality in buffaloes — cutting losses and increasing the strength of the Farmer FIRST buffalo herd.
  3. Diversification and adoption of horticulture crops in the area, employment generation, nutritional security and success stories. Scope for horizontal spread of technology dissemination farmer to farmer and through developmental agencies.
  4. Strengthening of the agricultural technologies demonstration and entrepreneurship unit (ATU) by creating a farmer knowledge network platform.
